Rugby is a very different game to American Football, although at first glance there may be some similarities.

One of the main differences is in the number of players. Rugby has 15 players on the field, but also has 8 reserves. In American Football the team consists of 11 players. One of the reasons why people think that the games are so similar is that the ball is the same shape, but the way in which the pass is played is different in each sport.

The game of rugby lasts for 80 minutes, with two halves of 40 minutes each. American Football is played in quarters, each lasting for 15 minutes and there is a 12 minute break at the match’s halfway point, with breaks of two minutes after both the first and third quarters. The teams will change ends after each quarter.

In rugby the points system is very different to that in American Football. You can score a try which is worth 5 points, a conversion which is worth 2 points or you can get 3 points for a drop goal or penalty. In American Football, the score for a touchdown – which is very similar to a try in rugby – is 6 points. However, there is an extra point for a conversion that is similar to that in rugby, and there is 3 points for a field goal, although these are done at certain points in the game.

The American Football NFL plays a season that consists of 256 games. There are 32 teams in the league and each will play 16 games. There are both domestic and test seasons in rugby. The teams that feature in tier one – such as the All Blacks, Springboks and the main European teams – have between 12 and 15 test matches in each calendar year.
